Revised Deferment Guidelines for Full-time Studies
NS-liable persons graduating from Sep 2011 onwards may be granted deferment to pursue full-time overseas studies or local studies (up to GCE 'A' Levels, Polytechnic Diploma or equivalent qualifications) at private institutions registered with the Council for Private Education, if they are able to commence their courses before 19 years old (for Secondary 4 Express Stream students) or 20 years old (for Secondary 5 Normal Stream students), as at 1st January of the course commencement year. The higher cut-off age will apply to courses commencing from 1st January 2012 onwards.
Video series on 'EVERY SINGAPOREAN SON'
To better prepare for National Service (NS) and find out more about the rigours of military life during NS, you can check out a video series titled "Every Singaporean Son". The video series seeks to realistically capture the various facets of the recruits' lives and training during BMT.
Consisting of a trailer and 18 episodes, each about six minutes in duration, the series is available for viewing on the Cyberpioneer TV. The various episodes capture the progress of a section of recruits in Pulau Tekong from their enlistment day at Basic Military Training to their Graduation Parade.
The show vividly captures some of the key highlights in the BMT programme like physical training, the standard obstacle course and a 7-day field camp. The video series follows in the reality TV genre by adding a human element in the training. Expect to see not just the rigours of BMT but also lighter moments of recruits relaxing in between lessons. Changes to BMT Programme
The SAF BMT system will now include a new 19-week obese BMT with effect from February 2010, a new 9-week PES B2 BMT from June 2010, a new 9-week BMT for PES C recruits from June 2010, and a new 4-week BMT for PES E recruits.
Physical Training Phase Extended To 8 Weeks
MINDEF will be introducing an 8-week Physical Training Phase (PTP) to enhance the physical fitness of NSFs who fail to attain at least a NAPFA silver award prior to enlistment. It will replace the current 4-week PTP starting from Dec 09.
MINDEF Enhances the SAF Group Term Life Insurance Scheme
With effect from 1 Jan 09, MINDEF employees and SAF active servicemen including NSFs, will be automatically insured for $100,000, unless they choose to opt out. This initiative, which rides on the existing SAF Group Term Life Insurance scheme, is aimed at encouraging them to have a minimum level of insurance protection for themselves.
The monthly allowance for NSFs will be increased by $20 to help them pay for the premium under the scheme. The increase in NS allowance takes effect from 1 Jan 09.
New SAF Combat Uniform
To meet the varying demands of the 3rd Generation SAF operating environment, the SAF has introduced a new combat uniform which will enhance the soldier’s survivability and sustainability while in combat, helping him achieve greater overall mission success.
The new SAF combat uniform will be phased in over three years, taking into consideration the wear and tear of the serviceman’s existing uniform. For a start, BMT recruits from the Jan 09 intake will be putting on the new combat uniforms.
SAF Introduces New Specialist Cadet Rank
The SAF has introduced a new Specialist Cadet (SCT) rank to recognise the challenging roles and increased responsibilities of the Specialists Corps in the 3rd Generation SAF. The new rank comes into effect on 22 Dec 08.
